Starting today, Amazon is selling SanDisk Extreme microSD cards with a storage capacity of 1TB. If you weren’t aware, that’s an enormous leap from the previous microSD card size limit of 512GB; it’s enough storage to hold more than 14,000 apps and over four times as many photos.
As you might expect, you’ll have to pay through the nose for the privilege. SanDisk’s 1TB microSD card costs an astonishing £454 if you go the Amazon route and $450 (£350) on the SanDisk US website.
For £454, you could nab yourself an Xbox One X plus one brand-new game to play on it; four 1TB Samsung 860 QVO SSDs for your PC; or 605 cans of Heinz baked beans . All that, for a product the size of a fingernail.
There’s clearly a high premium to pay, particularly given that the 256GB version of the SanDisk Extreme is currently selling for a mere £65 (down from £106) on Amazon.
At the time of writing, Amazon is accepting back orders on the 1TB microSD card – model number SDSQXA1-1T00-GN6MA – with guaranteed shipping in 1-2 months. Fortunately, the SanDisk website lists the product as in stock, although only on the US store.
SanDisk states that the 1TB Extreme offers read speeds of up to 90MB/sec and write speeds of up to 60MB/sec. It can record 4K video, and is compatible with the new V30 speed class. The microSD is apparently also waterproof, shockproof and X-ray proof, and comes with a 30-year warranty in case those things don’t turn out to be true.
If those specs aren’t enough for you, SanDisk has also released the Extreme Pro, with read speeds of up to 170MB/sec and write speeds of up to 90MB/sec. It’s available on Amazon right now for £520 (or 693 cans of baked beans).
