Sony's Xperia Z1F is now official, having been revealed overnight by Japanese mobile network NTT Docomo. Previously known by the Honami Mini codename, the handset shrinks down the flagship Xperia Z1 to a more manageable size.
Whereas the Z1 had a 5in, Full HD display, the Z1F has a 4.3in, 720p screen. It still uses Sony's proprietary Triluminos technology, but the significantly smaller size should be much more manageable for smaller hands. It's roughly the same size as an Apple iPhone 5s , albeit at a slightly thicker 9.4mm to accommodate Sony's waterproof glass design.
Unlike other "mini" smartphones, such as the HTC One Mini and Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini which reduce internal specifications as well as size compared to their full-size counterparts, Sony has kept almost everything on par with the larger Z1. The Z1F is powered by a 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, paired with 2GB of RAM, a 2,300mAh battery and Sony's 20-megapixel G-Lens rear camera.
The Xperia Z1F will launch in a choice of black, white, lime, and pink colours, although it's listed as an NTT Docomo Japanese exclusive. The company secured the Xperia SX last year, which never saw a global launch, so until Sony confirms worldwide availability it could remain in the Far East for the foreseeable future.
However, the carrier won't be launching the phone until December, so there's still plenty of time for Sony to consider a global launch.
