GoPro has announced an October launch event that could herald the arrival of the Hero 8 Black. The event – taking place on 1 October – was unveiled on Twitter via a brief teaser video that features at least two new GoPro products, one of which is almost certainly the GoPro Hero 8 Black.
You’ll have to watch and rewatch the clip to identify the actual products, but there’s one dead giveaway: the regular GoPro footage used in the teaser is interspersed with footage from a 360-degree camera. Rumours currently suggest that, alongside the GoPro Hero 8 Black, we can expect to see a GoPro Max, which will replace the current 360-degree model (the GoPro Fusion).
GoPro remains unsurprisingly tight-lipped on the subject of the new cameras. Original leaks suggested that the new Hero 8 model could support 4K at up to 120fps and 1080p (Full HD) at up to 480fps; since then, however, expectations have been lowered, with more recent rumours pointing to shooting capabilities of 4K/60fps and 1080p/240fps.
It seems as though the Hero 8 Black will retain the same basic specifications as its predecessor the Hero 7. The dimensions will remain unchanged, as will the 1,220mAh battery; rumours suggest the 12-megapixel snapper won’t gain any extra megapixels, although a new lens is apparently in the offing.
The most significant upgrades to the Hero 8 will seemingly come from a new suite of optional extras. Leaks report that GoPro has designed a “Media Module” housing that will support an LED light, external microphone and even a small display.
Assuming this announcement concerns the Hero 8 Black, you can expect to see the new GoPro camera(s) as soon as next week. Those who want to watch the 1 October event can do so via the GoPro YouTube channel, where a live stream will run seemingly at 2pm GMT.
