First look Halo: Nightfall trailer lands from SDCC

San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) has kicked off in California, with Microsoft using the show to give gamers the first look at Halo: Nightfall - the live-action series that promises to fill in the gaps between Halo 4 and next year's Halo 5: Guardians . Halo 5 developer 343 industries and Ridley Scott's Scott Free Productions revealed the first-look trailer during a panel discussing the game, announcing plot details and the main characters that will play a prominent role in both TV show and game.

As well as revealing the SDCC trailer, Microsoft also added new information about the forthcoming series to the official Xbox blog . Halo: Nightfall will focus on "legendary manhunter" Jameson Locke, played by Mike Colter, who gets caught up in a terrorist attack while on a recon mission to the colony world Sedra. Locke's team of Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) agents have to work with a Sedran commander with a strong dislike of the ONI forces in order to survive and make it back home.

It sounds entirely separate from the existing Halo mythology, with little mention of the iconic Covenant forces or Spartan programme, but the trailer promises some familiar sights for fans of the series like Warthog buggies, UNSC soldiers and Master Chief's trademark assault rifle.

"In science fiction, we're always searching for new frontiers. We're drawn to the unknown," Alien director Ridley Scott, onboard as executive producer, said of the series. "With Halo: Nightfall, we're pioneering a new medium in terms of interactive storytelling on Xbox.  It’s going to be fun for long-time fans to see how the worlds come together with an ambition to attract new fans along the way with what we’ve created."

Halo: Nightfall will be available for streaming over Xbox Live on both the Xbox One and Xbox 360 from the 11th of November, and will be included as part of Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
